You Can Be A Dad Again After A Reverse Vasectomy!

First and foremost, lets dispel the myths.

The fact is, your testicles never stopped making sperm. They are just blocked because of a previous vasectomy.

Many inexperienced doctors wrongfully tell their patients that , “Its been so long since you had a vasectomy that a reversal wont work! “

This is not true!

Hundreds of Medical Studies indicate that success rates can be as high as 95.5 percent if the vasectomy was done within the last 10 years.

The success rate can decline when a man has had his vasectomy 15 years ago.

Can You Reverse A Vasectomy?

In the hands of a skilled and experienced urologic microsurgeons such as those at The Reverse Vasectomy Center Philippines, men can have a higher chance for success as far out as 42 years from vasectomy!

So can you reverse a vasectomy, or can a vasectomy be reversed? The answer is with the right skilled surgeons – yes you can.

What Is A Vasectomy Reversal?

Vasectomy reversal is surgery to undo a vasectomy that was previously done. The vasectomy reversal surgery reconnects each tube (vas deferens) that carries sperm from a testicle into the semen.

After a successful vasectomy reversal, sperm are again present in the semen through the vase deferens enabling the possibility of getting your partner pregnant.

Pregnancy rates after vasectomy reversal will range from about 30 percent to over 90 percent, depending on the type of procedure.

Many factors affect whether a reversal is successful in achieving pregnancy, these include: time since a vasectomy, your partner’s age, your surgeons experience, and whether or not you have had any fertility issues previously.

How Is A Vasectomy Reversed?

Vasectomy reversal is more difficult than a vasectomy and is usually done using microsurgery, in which a surgeon uses a powerful surgical microscope to magnify the vas deferens as much as 40 times its size. This type of surgery requires specialized skills and expertise.

How is a vasectomy reversed? There are generally two methods to reversing a vasectomy. The first method is through a procedure called a vasovasostomy, where your surgeon sews the ends of the vas deferens from the testes to the penis back together.

The other method is through a procedure called vasoepididymostomy. In this mircrosurgery, the surgeon will attached the vas deferens to the small organ at the back of each testicle that holds sperm. A vasovasostomy is a more difficult and generally chosen if a vasovasostomy can’t be done or isn’t likely to work.

The decision to perform a vasovasostomy versus a vasoepididymostomy depends on whether sperm are seen when fluid from the vas deferens is analyzed at the time of surgery.

You probably won’t know ahead of time which procedure is needed. In most cases, the surgeon decides during the operation which technique will work best.

Sometimes a combination of the two surgical techniques is needed — a vasovasostomy on one side and a vasoepididymostomy on the other. The longer it has been since your vasectomy, the more likely you are to need a vasoepididymostomy on one or both sides.

Vasectomy reversals are performed in a hospital or clinic where you will be released after your recovery in about a few hours. Prior to surgery, you will be given general anesthesia so you’re not awake and won’t feel anything during your surgery. Full recovery takes about 2 weeks.

How Is The Reverse Vasectomy Done?

During the vasectomy reversal surgery, your surgeon will make a small incision on on your scrotum. This will expose the tube that carries sperm (vas deferens) and release it from surrounding tissues.

Next, your surgeon will cut open the vas deferens and examine the fluid inside. When sperm are present in the fluid, the ends of the vas deferens can be connected to re-establish the passageway for sperm.

If the fluid contains no sperm, scar tissue may be blocking sperm flow. In this case, your doctor may choose to perform a vasoepididymostomy.

Recovering From A Reverse Vasectomy!

After the procedure, your surgeon will cover the incisions (which are sutured together) with bandages and will provide you tightfitting undergarments, such as an athletic supporter. You will probably be instructed to apply ice bags into the area to reduce swelling for 24 to 48 hours.

Your stitches should be reabsorbed within the body within 7 to 10 days. You may be sore for several days.

As the anesthesia wears off, you may have some pain and swelling but this should subside with the pain medications you are provided to take after surgery. For most, the pain is tolerable and should diminish with two days to a week.

Recovering from a reverse vasectomy, for the first two days after surgery, avoid anything that might get the surgery site wet, such as bathing or swimming.

Cautiously, limit any activities that may pull on the testicles or scrotum, such as jogging, sporting activities, biking or heavy lifting, for at least six to eight weeks after surgery.

If you have a desk job, you’ll probably be able to return to work a few days after surgery. If you perform physical labor or have a job that requires much walking or driving, talk to your doctor about when it’s safe to go back to work.

Don’t have sexual intercourse or ejaculate until your doctor says it’s OK. Most men need to refrain from ejaculating for two to three weeks after surgery.

What Are The Risks Of Reverse Vasectomy!

Almost all vasectomies can be reverse, but there is no guarantee that you and your partner will conceive a child. Again, as described previously there are many factors that make the conception of a child possible.

That said, the vasectomy reversal procedure rarely leads to serious complications. The risks include:

Bleeding within the scrotum. This can lead to a collection of blood (hematoma) that causes painful swelling. You can reduce the risk of hematoma by following your doctor’s instructions to rest, use scrotal support and apply ice packs after surgery.

Infection in the area where the incisions are made. Although very uncommon, infections are a risk with any surgery and may require treatment with antibiotics.

What if I Have Pain After Vasectomy Reversal?

Some patients indicate that, “I Have Pain After Vasectomy Reversal?” Chronic, persistent pain after vasectomy reversal is uncommon. In the event of chronic pain that has not subsided within the first week, see your doctor immediately.

Post Vasectomy Reversal Surgery Results.

Weeks after your surgery, your surgeon may examine your semen under a microscope to see if the operation was successful and may check your semen periodically. Unless you get your partner pregnant, checking your semen for sperm is the only way to tell if your vasectomy reversal was a success.

When a vasectomy reversal is successful, sperm may appear in the semen within a few weeks, but it can sometimes take a year or more. The likelihood of achieving pregnancy depends on various factors, including the number and quality of sperm present and the female partner’s age.
